If only I had more motivation!

Motivation is something that we all struggle with, especially when it's cold and dark and all we feel like is getting under the covers with our cozy jammies on.
Don't you wish you could just purchase some motivation online and have a drone drop it off on your doorstep? I've heard so many times from people who say, if I only had more motivation, then life would be perfect.
That bodes the question, how much motivation do we need? Motivation is an interesting phenomenon. Some days we have a ton and other times we have none. So how important is it really to get us to where we want to go? If I think about motivation fundamentally, we actually need some kind of motivation to do everything. In order to get out of bed in the morning we need something saying, get up. It could be our full bladders giving us the motivation, but something is tugging at us to do something. We certainly get some motivation by going to work everyday, that paycheck is incredibly motivating.
So let's go back to the question, how much motivation do you really need to make changes in your lifestyle? If we look at the science there's actually quite a bit more to lifestyle change than motivation alone. Fisher and Fisher published some research in 1992 on how we change our lifestyle and they came up with 3 elements: information, motivation and a plan are the keys. We seem to focus on one of these, rather than them working in synergy. I don't know how many times I've said to myself I'm really motivated to do something and yet I'm still sitting on the couch doing nothing about that thing that was so important.
So the next time you are sitting there saying to yourself, if I just had more motivation, remember it's not the lack of motivation alone that we are missing it's the 2 other legs of the table as well. We need just enough motivation to get started.
