Is my metabolism dead?
You may have said to yourself over the years that your slow metabolism is the reason why you struggle with your weight. After all of those years of yo-yo dieting you probably think you've completely destroyed it.
Are you blaming your metabolism with your struggle for weight loss? Let's take a look at what the metabolism is for a moment. When we eat or drink anything, with calories, the body turns these calories into fuel or energy.
The body actually needs a lot of energy to maintain all of the systems in your body, such as your organs, brain, blood, muscles, breathing and so on. The number of calories your body uses to carry out these basic functions is known as your basal metabolic rate — what you might call your metabolism.
There are several factors that affect your metabolism. A few include:
- Your body's size and composition - People who weight more and have more muscle mass burn more calories.
- Your gender - Men have a faster metabolism than women because they have more muscle mass. This is why it seems as though men lose weight faster. Sorry ladies.
- Your age - As we age we tend to lose our muscle mass. Think about someone who is in their 20s vs someone in their 70s. This is partly just the natural aging process.
You may be surprised to learn that people who are struggling with their weight don't have a dead or slow metabolism, they actually have a normal and a lot of times fast metabolism. This idea may be shocking to you. This also may be getting you thinking about your own metabolism. Where does your metabolism fall on the continuum? Consider having your metabolism measured to see if you are not eating in the right range for your body. And yes if you don't eat enough, your body goes into starvation mode and will hold on to every morsel you put into your mouth.
